Massimo: Good morning and welcome to this new episode of Marketing Caffè B2B, where we introduce a company in the time it takes to drink a coffee. Today, we meet Nicola from The SkyRoom, whom I welcome and ask to introduce himself and tell us how his idea originated.
Nicola Nardin: Good morning everyone, my name is Nicola and I am the founder of The Sky Room. The idea was born after a holiday in Morocco, during which I had an experience in a desert glamping site. It was a magical moment, but the accommodation was a simple tent: great atmosphere, but poor quality. Back home, I decided to create accommodation immersed in nature but comfortable, with high-quality materials and unique design. This is how The SkyRoom was born, a structure made of wood and glass with a transparent, sliding roof, designed for sleeping under the stars in total comfort.
Massimo: So, an idea born from a real experience and a clear vision: “I would do this differently”. However, bringing such an innovative idea to the market is not simple. What was the biggest challenge you faced?
Nicola: Certainly the regulatory aspect. In Trentino, it was complex to find a definition: The Sky Room is not a tent, but neither is it a building. It is a removable module under 9 m², falling under free construction, but difficult to place within traditional building regulations. The first installation was in Val di Fiemme, but shortly after, the Municipality stopped everything. It was a challenge, but also a stimulus: I started looking outside Trentino and today we have installed 12 SkyRooms from Piedmont to Basilicata. This allowed me to find more open and receptive realities towards tourist innovation.
Massimo: From this, a double challenge emerges: explaining the concept to both authorities and clients. From a communication or marketing perspective, what was your winning move?
Nicola: Even before marketing, the winning decision was to focus on quality and a sustainable business model. I chose to offer The Sky Rooms on loan for use to agricultural companies or agritourism businesses, instead of selling them directly. In this way, we break down entry barriers: the partner does not have to invest immediately, I guarantee minimal maintenance and handle promotion. They only need to focus on hospitality and the guest experience. It's a formula that benefits both and creates shared growth.
Massimo: A win-win approach, then. Looking more broadly at the hospitality and experiential tourism sector, what do you think are the main challenges for the coming years?
Nicola: I believe the challenges will be twofold: on one hand, succeeding in entering new markets, even outside Europe, and on the other, building a more open dialogue with institutions. Clear regulations are needed for these new forms of hospitality, otherwise, we remain in a grey area where each Municipality interprets things in its own way.
Massimo: And for anyone looking to launch a startup or an innovative idea in tourism, what advice would you give?
Nicola: My advice is to create and cultivate your network. Meeting people in the sector, even those who are further ahead or in key roles, helps to understand how the market evolves and to find concrete inspirations. And then try, travel, experience different types of tourism to truly understand what feels right and where you can put your passion.
Massimo: Thank you for sharing your story and your vision. Where can our listeners find you?
Nicola: We have two websites:
- The B2B portal for partners is www.theskyroom.it
- The website for those who want to book a stay is www.theskyroom.eu
We are also on Instagram as @theskyroom.official and on TikTok as @the.skyroom.
